Key points about Heat pumps
A heat pump extracts heat from outdoor air, the ground or groundwater and raises its temperature using electricity. Cost-effectiveness depends on more than the appliance alone: heating load, flow temperature, domestic hot water production and the existing heat emitters must work together. TOPAL plans and implements solutions tailored to the building in Gelsenkirchen.
Technology and planning at a glance
Heating load and existing radiators
A room-by-room heat load calculation provides a sound basis for selecting the required capacity. Existing buildings can also be heated with heat pumps. The key question is whether radiators or underfloor heating can deliver the required heat at the lowest possible flow temperatures; some radiators may need upgrading.
Location, noise and electrical connection
An air-to-water heat pump needs a suitable location with unobstructed airflow, maintenance access and practical pipe routing. Clearances and noise levels at the property and neighboring homes must be considered before installation. The power supply, circuit protection and, where necessary, the meter cabinet must also be checked.
Cost range and subsidies
As a nationwide guide, the German consumer advice centers quote approximately EUR 20,000 to EUR 50,000 for a heat pump including installation in a single-family home. Actual costs depend on the heat source, heating system, electrical work and required modifications; this is expressly not a fixed TOPAL price. KfW heating subsidy programme 458 may be relevant for eligible measures. The application sequence and current conditions must be checked before a binding order is placed.
How the project is prepared and carried out
- Record building data
Assess the existing heating system, energy use, heat emitters, insulation and domestic hot water demand.
- Size the system
Coordinate the heating load, potential flow temperatures, unit location and hydraulic integration.
- Prepare installation
Where needed, arrange the electrical contractor, pipe routes, foundation and removal of the old system.
- Install and commission
After installation, check operating parameters, heat distribution and controls; user instruction forms part of handover.
Information to include in your enquiry
Helpful details include the year the building was constructed, approximate living area, type and age of the existing heating system, annual consumption, radiator or underfloor heating details, and photos of the plant room and possible outdoor unit location.
TOPAL operates in Gelsenkirchen and the surrounding area. Availability at a specific location and the possible appointment date will be agreed when you enquire.
Frequently asked questions about Heat pumps
Can a heat pump work with conventional radiators?
Yes, it can. What matters is whether the radiators provide enough heat at a lower flow temperature. If not, larger radiators or other adjustments may be appropriate in individual rooms.
How long does conversion take?
Giving a fixed duration without inspecting the property would be unreliable. The time required depends on removal of the old unit, electrical installation, location and necessary pipework. The sequence can be planned more precisely after the site survey.
When should subsidies be checked?
Before starting work in a way that jeopardizes eligibility. KfW programme 458 has specific application and contract requirements. The KfW rules in force when the project is undertaken are decisive.
